New Space – Architects

Nestled within a dense urban fabric in Singapore, the Vimalakirti Buddhist Centre reimagines the typology of a spiritual retreat within a vertical, city-bound context. The building’s facade—composed of rhythmic white fins—creates a sense of stillness and unity, filtering daylight while offering a subtle, dignified presence along the streetscape. This minimalist exterior reflects the contemplative nature of the practice within, bridging tradition and modernity through architectural clarity.

Internally, the spatial journey is orchestrated as a quiet ascension—from public reception spaces to sacred halls above. At the heart of the centre lies a double-height prayer hall, where natural light washes over intricate murals and a golden Buddha sculpture, creating a meditative atmosphere. The sectional layering accommodates multiple functions—ritual, study, and gathering—while maintaining a coherent, serene interior language that supports the rhythm of spiritual life.

The design is a study in restraint, proportion, and symbolism. By distilling architectural elements to their essence, the Vimalakirti Buddhist Centre becomes more than a place of worship—it becomes a vessel for stillness, reflection, and spiritual grounding in the midst of city life.
